Tansa Server
The Tansa Server makes the Tansa Text Proofing and Hyphenation services available to the Tansa Client applications.
Because the Tansa software is server-based, nearly everyone in your organization can use the same set of spelling, style, punctuation and hyphenation rules — no matter what their role is in the organization. The Tansa Server currently supports two Tansa proofing services:
- The Text Proofing Service is included as part of the basic Tansa Text Proofing System and provides corrections for spelling, text usage (style) and punctuation.
- The Hyphenation Service is an optional add-on to the Tansa Text Proofing System for those clients that wish to use Tansa to gain more control over their text hyphenation.
In addition to these two services, two other applications are installed and configured on your Tansa server.
- The Tansa Web Service: Using the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) Web server, the Tansa Web Service handles all communication between the client software and the Tansa Server.
- Tansa Update: An FTP-based process helps Tansa system administrators manage and keep their Tansa solution up-to-date.

The Tansa Text Proofing System 3 Server software includes the following general features:
- Multiple language profiles: The same Tansa Server can host several dictionaries or language profiles simultaneously.
- Multiprocessor support: Tansa Server supports machines with several CPUs installed. This makes it possible for the Server program to work with several proofing tasks simultaneously. For example, the Server program can proof two or more documents simultaneously.
NOTE: A "language profile" is an individual language configuration, a language variant, or a different set of style/spelling rules for a separate publication or department.
Text Proofing
Tansa is far more effective at finding and correcting spelling, text usage (style) and punctuation mistakes than ordinary spelling tools, because of the advanced proofing process that is employed by the server.
Each document that is submitted to the server is scanned multiple times and several techniques are applied to spot errors and determine the correction. For example, the Tansa Server:
- Analyzes the text for mistakes in punctuation,
- Looks for mistakes in capitalization (case),
- Looks at individual words and compares them to all known correct spellings, as well as common misspellings and typos.
- Applies specific style rules through search and replace methods,
- Looks for known phrases and style constructions, as well as common mistakes in phrasing and style,
- Looks for known people names, place names and company names.
All of this happens in a matter of seconds. The Tansa Server can process tens of thousands of words per second.
Capitalization
Tansa can handle different methods for capitalizing words and phrases. Names are managed differently than other words. For example, a name can only be printed in one of two ways:
- Title case (John Smith)
- All caps (JOHN SMITH)
Other words can be printed in one of three ways:
- Lowercase (orthography)
- Title case (Orthography)
- All caps (ORTHOGRAPHY)
Abbreviations
Tansa will recognize most common abbreviations and correct them, depending on a publication’s preferred style, including:
- 2 PM to 2 p.m.
If there is an abbreviation that Tansa doesn't recognize, it will appear as an “Unknown” so that it is possible for the Language Editor or Administrator to add it to the system.
Punctuation
The Tansa Server can offer corrections for some basic types of punctuation corrections, including:
- Spaces after a comma, colon, semicolon, exclamation point and question mark,
- Two spaces will be corrected to a single space,
- Spaces before periods, commas, colons, semicolons, exclamation points and questions marks will be removed,
- Double periods, commas, etc., will be corrected.
Miscellaneous
- Phrases that contain numbers (example: the 30-year crisis) will be handled properly.
- It is possible to specify Warning words so that users will be alerted when these words are used.
- All e-mail addresses will be ignored by the Tansa Server.
- Internet URLs and file paths will also be ignored by the Tansa Server.
